Central and Eastern Newbigin Shield Clash

Central Squash will take on Squash Eastern in its annual representative challenge for the Newbigin
Shield this Saturday at the SquashGym complex in Palmerston North. The competition that re-started in 2012 for representative play between the neighbouring squash districts of Central (Manawatu, Wanganui & Taranaki) vs Eastern (Hawkes Bay & Gisborne), and sees teams of 6 men & 6 women play their respective counterparts with each player having two games to decide the overall winner.

The shield has plenty of heritage and is highly sought after, having been played for between the two neighbours for over 40 years and was originally donated by Jim Newbigin who was a leading figure in the establishment of squash in the Hawkes Bay but also spent some early years in Palmerston North. It was first played for in 1971 but fell into recess in the mid 2000’s. Last year saw it reinvented and Central won that clash in Napier and are the current holders.

Central’s team is dominated by the powerful Palmerston North SquashGym club with 10 of the 12 players coming from its ranks. Unavailable for the Central this weekend were SquashGym’s Kashif Shuja and Matt Nation, and a lot of the players will be using this as an important hit out with Nationals only three weeks away. Play will get under way with round 1 starting at 10.15am, while the afternoon round kicks off at 2.15pm.
