NZ goes down fighting at World Champs

A tough day at the office for the New Zealand team at the World Men's Team Squash Championships in France.

The 12th seeded Kiwis have gone down 3-0 to fifth seeded Malaysia in the second round of pool play, although the scoreline doesn't reflect how close the kiwi side pushed their higher raMartin & Campbellnked opponents.

Martin Knight did his best to put New Zealand on the front foot in the opening match against Nafizwan Adnan, but came up just shy in a 12-10, 10-12, 11-5, 12-10 defeat.  Evan Williams was then desperately unlucky not to beat Muhd Asyraf Azan, fighting back from 2-0 down to square the match at 2-all, before being pipped 12-10, in the fifth.  Williams had match ball at 10-9 in the decider, but the Malaysian simply wouldn't lie down and clawed his way back to steal an 11-7, 11-9, 6-11, 8-11, 12-10 victory.

That left Campbell Grayson to play the dead rubber against world number 23 Ong Beng Hee, and while both players were reluctant to expend too much energy with some big matches ahead, it was the Malaysian who did just enough to secure an 11-7, 11-6, 11-9 win to complete the clean sweep.

New Zealand will Botswana in the final round of pool play tomorrow and a win will confirm second place in Group E and a place in the top 16 playoffs.
