Doubles Draws Done
16 Oct 2012The draws for the National Doubles Championships, to be played this Saturday 20 October in Auckland, have been finalised.
Headlining the competition in the men's draw are Lance Beddoes and Phil Buscke - regular hosts of the wildly popular Squash on Squash show featured on youtube, and pictured at right. Buscke, who is almost as famous for his guitar skills for The Datsuns as he is for his forehand drop, is a steady and consistent player whose skills should complement the skilful and deceptive Beddoes. However, the two are unlikely to have it easy, with second seeds (and defending champions) Paul Coll and Bryce Redman a proven combination in the doubles format.
The top seeded teams in the women's draw are remarkably made up entirely of New Zealand national age group champions. The top seeds Abbie Palmer and Lisa Cowlard from the North Shore club are the reigning national champions in the under 15 and 40-44 age groups respectively, while Ellie Epke (under 19) and Hayley Hughes (under 17) from the Harcourts Eden Epsom Club are the second seeds.
Beddoes and Cowlard will team up in the Mixed Doubles as top seeds to give themselves a second chance at a national title. Their stiffest competition is expected to come from defending champions Michael Sunderland and Georgina Shelton-Agar.
Play will commence from 10.30am at the National Squash Centre in Pt. Chevalier, with the finals commencing from 3.45pm. All spectators are welcome.
