He Professionalised the Sport

Ex-Squash NZ Vice President Brick Mathieson has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of community engagement.

Stratford's Richard (Brick) Mathieson passed away peacefully in his sleep last weekend, survived by his wife Alys and his children Richard and Prue.

Brick was a passionate squash player and administrator who has fulfilled many roles at all levels of squash in NZ. A life member of Central Squash and stalwart of Stratford Squash Club, Brick was on the NZ Squash Association Management Committee in the 1970s and was Vice President for some of that time.

Fellow Central District life member Graeme Randolph remembers Brick fondly, "he was instrumental in the professionalism of the District. He wasn't a great player, but he sure was passionate about the game and he was a bloody nice guy."

The funeral was held on Thursday in Stratford and the family have asked that in preference of flowers, donations can be made to the Taranaki Air Ambulance Trust.
