Inter District Finalists Found

It's the top two seeds in the final for both boys and girls at SquashGym Palmerston North today.

The finalists have been found in both the Boys and Girls Inter District Teams Squash Champs at SquashGym today. Wellington will play Bay of Plenty in the Boys while Auckland will play Wellington in the Girls.  The top seeds in both sections have cruised through to the finals and will be overwhelming favourites tomorrow
(Wednesday).

The Wellington Boys have not dropped a match in pool play and neither have the Auckland Girls.
Bay of Plenty who will meet Wellington in the Boys final won a marathon match against Eastern in their final pool match this afternoon which was essentially a semi-final. The tie was 2 – 1 to Bay of Plenty and required Alex Oakley to win a tough five setter to get the team through. In comparison, Wellington beat Canterbury 4 – 0 and only dropped one set in the tie. Wellington, boasting New Zealand Junior Champion Zac Millar will be hard to roll tomorrow and ‘the Bay’ will need a huge performance from number one and New Zealand Junior team member Ben Grindrod if he is to upset Millar. The other key matchup will be W2011 Rebecca and Jonathan Barnettellington’s Jonny Barnett and Bay’s James Cooper at number 2.

The Auckland Girls are stacked full of talent and should be too classy for Wellington. The interesting matchup will be New Zealand Junior Champ Ellie Epke’s rematch with Rebecca Barnett who she beat in a tight encounter only two days ago in the Under 19 final. Barnett who went into that match the favourite will be out for revenge to try and inspire her Wellington side to an upset victory. The powerful lower order of Auckland with Abbie Palmer and Hayley Hughes should see them through.

The local Central Boys side has finished third in their pool and will play off for 5th and 6th against Waikato. The team was seeded sixth and a win tomorrow will see them improve that placing by a spot. The Central Girls finished their tournament today by losing to Waikato in the 5th and 6th playoff. The team had 11 year old Kaitlyn Watts as their number one, plus 12 year old Courtney Trail at number three. Both would have gained valuable experience meaning Central will be one to watch out for in the future.

The match of the day was the Boys tie between Eastern and Auckland. The tie finished at 2 all, 6 games all so a points count back was required. Auckland snuck in 113 – 112 meaning they finished second in their pool and will playoff for third tomorrow.

The Gifford Trophy which is the combined games total of each district's Boys and Girls teams is proving a one horse race with Wellington on 77 combined games with Bay of Plenty trailing in second on 49.

Both finals get under way tomorrow at 10.00am at SquashGym.
