BOP vs. Canterbury in Masters Final

Bay of Plenty and Canterbury will contest the Masters Inter District Teams Event final in Napier this evening.

Top seeds Canterbury have cruised into the final today after beating comfortably beating Waikato 8/2 in their final pool game on Monday afternoon.  With their starting lineup boasting two individual title holders from the weekend just completed (in Scott Gardiner and Juliette Smith), as well as three runners-up (Grant Craig, Karen Walton and Freda Walker), Canterbury was always going to be a tough opponent for Waikato.  However the fifth seeds put up a good fight, with Nadine Cull and Teresa Simons collecting victories in the women's 35-39 and 40-44 strings respectively.

Bay of Plenty also progressed to the final, underlining their credentials by beating Eastern 9/1 in their final pool match.  While several of the matches were close, the Bay of Plenty team was able to close out the majority of matches to take momentum to the final.  The standout for Eastern was Hawkes Bay Club Manager Murray Sutherland, who picked up a straight sets win in the men's 55+ string.

After collecting one win apiece in the pool play stage of the tournament, Auckland and Wellington will play off for third place in a battle of the City Slickers.  As usual there will be no love lost between these two districts, who just plain don't like each other.

The remaining match in the event, between Waikato and Eastern, will decide fifth place.
