World Masters Champs Underway

The World Masters Championships commenced over the weekend, with some strong results for Kiwis.

With over 750 entries across 19 agr groups, the 16th World Masters Championships in Birmingham is a truly phenomenal event.  A contingent of 28 New Zealand players (the "Ol' Blacks") made the trip this year, and initial results have been encouraging.

In the men's 45-49 age group Richard van Rynbach, Kerrin Webster, and second seeded Gary Duberly have all progressed to the third round.  Craig Sproull and Mark Waldin have won their first round matches in the 50-54 and 55-59 age groups respectively.  The men's 60-64 age group has a particularly strong Kiwi presence, with Ross Wells, John Endean, Bruce Mellor, Wayne Seebeck and Tony Naughton all through to the second round.

On the women's side most Kiwis will be playing their first matches overnight, but Lisa Cowlard has won through to the second round of the women's 40-44 championships.
