Mitchell Park Win Masters Club Teams Champs

Mitchell Park take out defending champions SquashGym Palmerston North to win Masters Club Teams...

Mitchell Park has defeated SquashGym Palmerston North 2/1 in the final of the Masters Club Teams Championships at Feilding Squash Club over the weekend.

There was a strong turnout at the event, with 16 teams travelling to Manawatu to contest the titles.  The hard competition started first thing on Friday with some of the seedings being put to the test. Two eight draws split the 16 teams into championship and division one draws. Player age varied across the teams but the spirit of the tournament was fantastic.

The final was a true showdown.  Mitchell Park's Mickayla Kerr and Rob Brownrigg (SquashGym) went on first, and Mickayla's consistency and accuracy proved unstoppable, providing a first-up 3/0 win to Mitchell Park.  Next on Jason Burton-Brown pegged things back for SquashGym by winning a physically draining match against Paul Barnett, also 3/0.  The battle of the number ones, and ultimately the title, was then decided by Corey Love of Mitchell Park.  Although the match was won in straight games, it was a tough battle with the wily and experienced Grant Smith, and Mitchell Park was delighted to have its name etched on to the AD Long Cup.

The special plate was won by Silverdale, the plate by SquashGym Palmerston North, and the consolation plate went to Feilding.  SquashGym Palmerston North also won division one.

Squash New Zealand would like to congratulate all of the prize winners, and thank Feilding Squash Club for its hospitality, and for organising a great event.
