We start to take a look at our finalists for the Volunteer of the Year Awards in preparation for the 2017 Annual Awards that will take place on 25th November, 6.30pm at JetPark in Auckland.

The District Winners for the Volunteer of the Year Awards are as follow:

  • Northland - Gary Traill
  • Auckland - Gabe Marsters
  • Waikato - Awards Night Not Happened
  • Bay of Plenty - Doug Taylor
  • Wellington - Kent Hawkins
  • Canterbury - Nic Dann
  • Midlands - Vicki Rae
  • Southland - Andrea Dudley

Winners from each of the 11 regional District Associations are put forward as contenders for the coveted National Award. When deciding the judging panel considers the following:

  • Engagement - ability to inspire goodwill and develop others
  • Commitment - evidence of contributing time and dedicated service
  • Impact - signs of influence on the community to achieve results

Our second finalist is Andrea Dudley. Andrea is a member of the Makarewa Squash Club where she has made a significant contribution to junior, club and Squash Southland in 2017 over many levels. As the Makarewa Club Junior Co-ordinator, she has ramped up her work in getting local kids to experience and enjoy the game of squash. During the year, Andrea has worked alongside our local primary school, offering and running visits by all the senior school to have a go at squash getting other club members to help facilitate the on court activities. Following on from this, weekly coaching was organised by Andrea and taken by two squash playing Mums for those wanting to continue playing. The success of this meant a junior league for new players and some existing lower graded players was set up and successfully run leading up to and post junior interclub competition.

Andrea organised the three junior teams who played in the Southland wide interclub competition as well as co-ordinating and organising the Southland wide junior interclub competition. Her friendly, organised approach meant this competition was successfully run without any hitches. In order to encourage lower graded and ungraded juniors to play the game, and tournament, Andrea organised two, 1-day tournaments at our club, the format being multiple games, best of 3 and played in one day. This was very popular with both players and parents. Another initiative was to organise a league for those juniors more experienced to play pre-interclub to give them more court time and competitive games.

At the start of the 2017 year, Andrea put her name forward as a Southland development squad coach. With limited coaching experience, her primary focus was to get her squad enjoying squash. The engagement of her squad members and rapid improvement clearly showed her success in achieving this. To expand her coaching knowledge, Andrea co-ordinated with the Southland Coach Force Officer to attend coaching sessions and also organise two coaching modules for our club.

This year, Andrea has been selected to manage and coach the following squash teams: Southland U13 Boys team, James Hargest Boys and Girls team who were both placed at 1st at South Island Secondary Schools, and manage the James Hargest teams that won the Southland Secondary Schools.

Andrea has been forefront in organising/facilitating the following for the Makarewa Club in 2017:

  • Organised an adult beginners evening to increase our social membership, with all seven of these beginners now playing regularly in the Thursday social league,
  • Organised Wednesday Wackers league for more experienced adult players, both pre and post senior interclub,
  • Organised 2017 Club of the Year nomination,
  • Organised Three Makarewa Club Superchamp teams,
  • Organised three individual grants, successfully received totalling $2450 for use in 3 specific areas.

The year has been a huge year for the Makarewa Club organising and hosting tournaments and for most of these events, Andrea has organised promotional and advertising, delegated the food, and been on hand to help with court\control, helping enter results and other jobs as required.

Andrea has been a very active committee member during 2017 across a wide spectrum of squash activities and her friendly, organised,forward-thinking approach has been a key component to the further growth and success within our club and Southland squash in general.

Congratulations to Andrea on being a finalist for the Volunteer of the Year Award.
