Now we start to take a look at the Club and School Coach of the Year in preparation for the 2017 Annual Awards that will take place on 25th November, 6.30pm at JetPark in Auckland.

The nominations for the Club and School Coach of the Year are

  • Nicol Bekker
  • John Brown
  • Adam Odering
  • Keri & Krystal Rhodes
  • Karen Roberts
  • Jarrod van Driel
  • Manu Yam

To be eligible for the Club and School Coach of the Year the coach must be working with junior or senior athletes in a club or school setting (this could include coaching individuals, junior programmes, beginner coaching, schools coaching and graded teams).

When deciding a judging panel considers the following:

  • Coach development - number of modules attended and other learning opportunities taken
  • Coach activity - number of hours coached and types of programmes / services offered
  • Athlete outcomes - evidence of improving players / teams performances to achieve results
  • Coach's impact - influence that the coach has had on participation / membership

The first finalist is Nicol Bekker. Nicol is a member of the Whangarei Squash Club also working out of the Manaia Squash Club, Waipu Squash Club and Dargaville Squash Club.

Nicol received 2 nominations which read as follow. In November 2016 Nicol was awarded Squash Northland Coach of the Year. In the 2017 season Nicol has attended the Sports Injury Management module, Strapping, Paul Hornsby’s Coaching Clinic, online coaching forums and regular self development. Nicol has previously completed all Squash NZ coaching modules available in Northland as well as working alongside Paul Hornsby as an Assistant Coach to the Northland Development Squad in April and May 2017.

Nicol has dedicated huge hours to coaching in 2017. His 2016 coaching season ended late November 2016 and had started off again by mid to end January 2017. Over the summer months Nicol provided a free Squash Bootcamp fitness programme for Manaia juniors to get them ready for the early season. Throughout the year Nicol has coached:

  • Over 20 individual students one on one varying from new juniors to C grade adults across 6 different Northland clubs including Manaia, Whangarei, Kamo, Dargaville, Mid Western, Mangakahia.
  • Club juniors at Whangarei Squash Club (built up from 0 to 30 kids), Manaia Squash Club (18-20), Dargaville Squash Club (12-15), Waipu Squash Club (10).
  • Squash Northland appointed 2017 Kiwisquash Coach and facilitator delivering the Kiwisquash programme to the following schools Whangarei Intermediate (16-30), Waipu (18-20), Dargaville (12-15), Whangarei Christian School (45-50), Purua Area School (10-12), Parua Bay School (40).
  • Assistant Coach to the High Performance Coach for Squash Northland throughout the year as required.
  • Coached Manaia D Grade Mens superchamps team through to playoffs where they played against 3 regional clubs, unfortunately not making it through to nationals!
  • A typical week for Nicol would be 20-30 hours per week coaching to a variety of students from Kiwisquash at schools, club juniors, one on one competitive juniors and seniors, new members and players to squash – totalling between 150-200 students!

Nicol’s students have achieved great results with significant movements in their grades.

Where Nicol has delivered the Kiwisquash programme all Northland clubs have benefited from a gain in membership from school kids (and usually their parents too). New club juniors have become active in Northland tournaments and the already competitive club members have branched out to travel nationally for tournaments. This has increased Northland members presence across the country. Manaia Squash Club’s juniors have been the main contingent of entrants during the 2017 Junior Player Series. Club membership has increased in all clubs Nicol has coached at. The highest growth would be seen at Whangarei and Manaia clubs.

Congratulations Nicol on being a finalist in the Club and School Coach of the Year Award.
