Day 1 of New Zealand Masters Winds Up

The first day of the New Zealand Masters Championships being held at Kawaroa Park have wound up with most of the top seeds in the draws coming through unscathed.

In the 35+ Men’s draw 5th seed Fintan Blake made his way through to the top 4 taking out the 4th seed Simon Blake in 4. In the Women’s 35+ all top 4 seeds made their way to the semi-finals.

The 40+ draw saw another upset by the 5th seed Darren Barclay taking out 4th seed Craig Stratford in 5. In the Women’s 40+ the top 4 seeds all progressed to the semi-finals.

The Men’s 45+ draw saw the top 4 seeds progress into the quarter-finals whilst the only player in the 5-8 bracket to be knocked out was 8th seed Stephen O’Toole who went down to Paul Railton in 3. It was a similar story in the Women’s 45+ where 9th seed Erin Rangi-Watts took out 8th seed Johanne Erceg in 5 and Elizabeth Stewart made her way to the quarter-finals after Shari Ball had to withdraw.

In the Men’s 50+ it was the 9th seed Mark Millar who prevailed over 8th seed Steve Roughan with a win in 5. It was 6th seed Linda Ditchburn who took out Sue Wasley in 5 in the Women’s 50+ draw making her way to the semi-finals.

The Men’s 55+ saw 5th seed Allan Dallas take out 4th seed Colin Kitchen in a mammoth five setter whilst it was a similar story in the Women’s 55+ where 5th seed Karen Mitchell beat 4th seed Fran Hopkins in 5.

The Women’s 60+ played their first pool play match with Freda Walker winning in 4, whilst the Men’s 60+ saw 6th seed David Small make his way to the semi-finals with a win over 3rd seed Phil Tough in 4.

The Men’s 65+ saw 4th seed Peter Heagney make his way into the top pool alongside the 1st and 2nd seeds. The Men’s 70+ and 75+ combined draw kicked off with a mixture of results whilst in the Women’s 65+ and 70+ there were strong performances by the top seeds.
