Watts and Trimble Claim Aon New Zealand Junior Open Titles 2017

Kaitlyn Watts and Finn Trimble have claimed the 2017 Aon New Zealand Junior Open titles after some excellent matches.

The Girls Open final saw second seed Anna Hughes taking on top seed Kaitlyn Watts. Watts was on a high from the previous week having claimed the Oceania Junior Championships under 19 title. The first game saw Watts and Hughes moving the ball and each other around the court and they forced the mistakes from each other with Watts claiming the game 11/7. The second game saw Watts take an early lead and she never looked back after that forcing the tight balls and errors from Hughes with Watts claiming the second game 11/3. It was all in Watts corner in the final game and even with a brief blood break Watts kept her calm and took the win 11/4 claiming the 2017 Aon New Zealand Junior Open Girls title.

The Boys Open saw second seed Gabe Yam taking on 3/4 seed Finn Trimble. Trimble went into the match feeling confident from his win over top seed Matthew Lucente the night before. Trimble and Yam played some great hard rallies with excellent movement from both players. It was Trimble though that forced the errors and played some outstanding tight shots to claim the first game 11/6. Both players fought hard and had some great pickups and intense rallies with retrieval that was unexpected. Yam however forced the ball out of Trimbles reach and took the long game 12/10 to leave the game score 1/1. The third game saw more high intensity long rallies with great accuracy from both players and retrieval of balls many would expect to be gone. It was Trimble that was able to push through the pressure and reclaim the lead and the game 11/9. The fourth game saw some excellent shots from both players and Yam looked set to clinch the fourth with an excellent roller at 10-10 to give him game ball but Trimble kept his calm and managed to clinch the match in an exciting 13-11. Trimble goes back to back with titles having claimed the Under 19 Oceania Junior Championships title the weekend before and he joins his brother Max Trimble on the Boys trophy.
