The future of gaming machine funding
25 Jul 2016Based on Squash New Zealand’s Club Financial Analysis, 76% of all squash clubs receive an average of $12,000 in funding from gaming machines each year. With a decrease in funding available to communities, the Government are currently seeking our views on how funding from class 4 gambling can be used in the future.
Gaming machines are a critical source of funding for sport and recreation, with the sector receiving approximately $120m per annum. Many would like to see reduced gambling and / or a change to the current allocation of the revenue received from gambling, but as a sport we rely heavily on access to this funding from Squash New Zealand through to the club level. Any shift in the allocation of the percentage of funding away from squash would impact significantly on our ability to fund the services and programmes we offer our members.
