Set goals then smash them

Goals are a very important part of sport. They encourage improvement and optimism – and that’s what sets you up for success. It is important that you don’t set goals that are too easy to reach, as well as goals that are out of your control.

Goal Setting

There are 3 types of goals: outcome, performance and process.

  • Outcome goals focus on the result of a match or competition – the result.
  • Performance goals are the SMART goals related to statistics that can help you improve – the actions.
  • Process goals define what you will actually have to do – the execution.

Understanding the difference between these will help you organise your thoughts and will allow you to focus on what you want to achieve.

Here is just one example of a process goal and how it links to performance and outcome goals:

Process Performance Outcome
On Mondays and Wednesdays I will leave for the squash courts by 6pm. For the next 3 months I am going to play squash twice a week. To lost 5 kilograms before summer starts.

If you take care of the process, the rest will take care of itself.

Focusing on the result and progress is important, but outcome and performance goals can often be too intimidating and discouraging. Instead, by focusing on the process goals will get you thinking about what you actually have to do to achieve and before you know it, you’re there!

Goal setting tips

  • Make your goals something which you are both willing to work towards and able to achieve.
  • Write them down. Research show you are far more likely to achieve your goals if you do this.
  • Set one or two goals at a time so you are more likely to achieve it – rather than becoming overwhelmed and giving up on the lot.
  • Reward yourself and celebrate the successes.
