2017 Oceania Junior Championships Expression of Interest
11 Feb 2016Expressions of Interest are sought from Clubs to host the 2017 Oceania Junior Championships and Trans-Tasman Junior Tests.
The Oceania Junior Championships - and accompanying Trans-Tasman Junior Test Series - were revived in 2014 and were hosted in Invercargill in 2015. This event was hosted on the Gold Coast in in 2014 and 2016. New Zealand will host the 2017 edition, and expressions of interest are sought from enthusiastic clubs.
The 2017 event will be held on the Easter Weekend of 14-16 April (the first weekend of the school holidays). This will effectively create a 'circuit' of junior events, including:
- 14-16 April: Oceania Junior Championships
- 18-19 April: Trans-Tasman Test Series
- 21-23 April: New Zealand Junior Open
It is hoped that the creation of such a circuit will boost entries and participation.
NB: These dates, while probable, are not yet confirmed.
What does hosting involve?
The Championships are an age group event, with separate age groups for boys and girls at under 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 levels, running from Friday to Sunday played PAR 11.
The 2015 event attracted 120 entries whilst the 2014 and 2016 events attracted 150 and 170 entries respectively.
The Trans-Tasman Junior Test Series would be played at the venue mid-week (most likely Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon/evenings).
Organising an accommodation package in conjunction with hosting the event may provide a Club with an opportunity to expand its revenue streams.
Squash New Zealand will allocate National Referees, provide balls, and market the event.
