Squash to be ‘Official Sport’ of World Masters Games 2017

Squash joins 27 other sports codes as one of 28 announced as an ‘Official Sport’ of World Masters Games 2017.

Squash NZ CEO Jim O’Grady said he was absolutely delighted to be selected as a sport for World Masters Games 2017.  “The Games will provide squash with an exceptional opportunity to showcase our sport to people throughout New Zealand and overseas,”.  “It will also be fantastic for squash to be part of such a major multisport event alongside so many other sporting codes.”2017World Masters Games

Squash’s selection as an ‘Official Sport’ of the 2017 World Masters Games comes after a good deal of hard work between Squash New Zealand and Squash Auckland.  Sports were selected following a comprehensive bid process which O’Grady said will stand squash in good stead to ensure the sport is well and truly organised and ready to deliver the highest standard event for their athletes.  “During the next two years and 10 months we will work closely with Squash Auckland and World Masters Games 2017 to make sure squash players have a great experience on and off the court.

The event is likely to be the biggest sporting event New Zealand has ever hosted, with more than 25,000 competitors and 5,500 volunteers likely to be involved across the 28 sports.  The Games slogan ‘For the love of sport’ describes the atmosphere Auckland hopes to create throughout the sporting festival.  More information is available from the event website (www.worldmastersgames2017.co.nz), and various social media (generally using the handle @wmg2017).
