Favourites Take Doubles Titles

The favoured pairs have taken out the three major titles at the Big Barrel New Zealand Squash Doubles this weekend. The New Zealand combinations showed their class dominating their rivals in what will give the New Zealand selectors confidence ahead of Commonwealth Games selection later this month.

The FMG Men’s Open draw was one of the strongest doubles draws seen in this country for a number of years and the competition was intense. In true doubles style it showed that lower graded players could compete with more fancied opponents with skill and tactics coming to the fore. Jason Burton Brown and Croydon Rutherford continued their run through the draw with wins over A Graders Scott Galloway and Corey Love then Rod Bannister and Mike McSherry in the upset of the tournament. Both Burton Brown and Rutherford’s singles rankings are B2 but they showed they could outwit top A grade players in the doubles format. They would eventually finish fourth.2012 Joelle & Amanda

Top seeds Paul Coll and Lance Beddoes powered their way through the rounds. With Martin Knight absent from the tournament, Coll and Beddoes pounced on their chance to take a National title and defeated Evan Williams and Zac Millar of Wellington in two sets in the final. Coll and Beddoes will now wait to see if the New Zealand Olympic committee will rubber stamp their Commonwealth Games selection as the second doubles combination behind Martin Knight and Campbell Grayson.

The BNZ Women’s Open draw also saw the New Zealand combinations progress through to the final. Joelle King and Amanda Landers-Murphy hardly dropped a point on their way to the final but Megan Craig and Kylie Lindsay were pushed hard by local pair Danielle Fourie and Rebecca Barnett in their semi, eventually winning 11-4, 11-9. Reports coming out of the New Zealand training camps were the two pairs were very close and the final showed that the two combinations had played each other a lot, but it was the top ranked pair of King and Landers-Murphy coming out on top, 11-5, 11-8.

Paul Coll and Amanda Landers Murphy were the top seeds in the MacDougalls Mixed Open draw, but they were pushed hard in the quarterfinals against the Barnett twins, Johnny and Rebecca having to survive a sudden death point at ten all in the first, then grinding out an 11-6 win in the second. A bit of an upset was caused by third seeds Lance Beddoes and Kylie Lindsay who beat second seeds Campbell Grayson and Megan Craig. Beddoes and Lindsay upset them two sets to love.

They could not repeat the magic in the final with Coll and Landers-Murphy proving too strong. The top seeds won the final 11-4, 11-4.

New Zealand Coach Paul Hornsby and his selectors will now need to make their recommendation to the New Zealand Olympic committee on their preferred combinations for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Selections are expected to be announced around May 15.
