First Round Doubles Results

The seeds are on track after the first round of the National Doubles Championships in Palmerston North.

All the top seeds are through round one of the Big Barrel New Zealand Doubles Championship with the major upset of round one coming in the FMG Men’s open from tournament director Jason Burton Brown and partner former New Zealand Badminton representative Croydon Rutherford. The 21st seeds took out 12th seeds Ben Calvert and Alex Oakley 11-10, 11-7 to shake up the men’s top draw. They will now play 4th seeds Scott Galloway and Corey Love from Wellington who will be nervous coming up against the doubles specialists. The left hand, right hand combination is an established doubles pair and are last years over 35’s New Zealand Doubles Champions. They will be looking to cause further upsets later in the event. 

The top women players all made it through comfortably in round one of the BNZ Women’s Open. Top seeds Joelle King and Amanda Landers-Murphy were ruthless in their first round match only conceding two points. Megan Craig and Kylie Lindsay also followed suit by only giving up two points. Local pair Danielle Fourie and Rebecca Barnett beat fellow locals Rebecca Clifford and Ansley Koolen in an easy two sets. They will now face Megan Craig and Kylie Lindsay in what should be the match of the round tomorrow morning. 

The MacDougalls Mixed Open has also gone to plan after round one. Match of the round was an entertaining game between former Commonwealth Games Gold medalist Glenn Wilson and Vicki Beker, against National under 13 champion Kaitlyn Watts and older brother Joseph. The experience of Wilson and Becker proved too much taking the match in two straight sets.
