Norman gets New Year gong

Fitting reward for former World Open champion Ross Norman.

A pleasant surprise for squash fans with the release of this year’s New Year Honours List.

Former world number two Ross Norman has been made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM), for his services to squash.  He plied his trade during a golden period in the sport for New Zealand, when the country also had the world’s third ranked player Stuart Davenport and while Susan Devoy was emerging as the dominant force in the women’s game.

Norman is best remembered for winning the 1986 World Open in Toulouse, when he beat Pakistan legend Jahangir Khan 9-5, 9-7, 7-9, 9-1 in the final.  The victory marked the end of a five year unbeaten run for Khan, which was the longest in the history of professional sport.Ross Norman in action

Norman retired from the international circuit in 1994.   He was inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.
