Fifth Career Title for Martin Knight

NZ number one Martin Knight has won the fifth PSA title of his professional career at the Goodlife Open in Ottawa.

Less than two months after his previous win, at the Charlottesville Open, Knight (pictured below with Joelle King at the 2013 North Island Championships) has added another PSA title to his collection.  North Island Champs Winners - small

In contrast to the Charlottesville win, achieved after a gruelling 98 minute final, Knight won the Goodlife Open in Ottawa without dropping a set.  After a straight games win over Canadian Adrian Dudzicki in the first round, Knight had matching 38 minute 3/0 victories over Englishman Tom Ford and Canadian Dane Sharp in the quarter- and semi-finals respectively.

This freshness stood him in good stead in the final against second-seeded Pakistani Danish Atlas Khan, as he was forced to absorb pressure from a positive start to the opening game by Atlas Khan.  He was able to do this very well, and remain consistent at the back-end of the game to take it 11-8.

A nip and tuck second game followed, with the two players trading points on their way to 10-10.  Again, Knight was able to absorb the pressure applied by his opponent and sneak the second set 13-11.  After conceding a 0-6 deficit in the third, Atlas Khan retired citing a shin injury picked up earlier in the match.

The Goodlife win will be particularly sweet for Knight, who finished runner-up at the same event in 2012.  He will have little time to celebrate, however, as he is back in action at the Squash Revolution Toronto Cup this coming weekend.

Result

Martin Knight (1) beat Danish Atlas Khan (2) 11-8 13-11 6-0 (ret.)
