Knight wins the Day in Charlottesville
23 Sep 2013Martin Knight has beaten Charles Sharpes to win the fourth PSA tour title of his career at the Charlottesville Open.
After 98 minutes of gruelling squash, the New Zealand champion and second seed ran out a 10-12 11-6 11-7 8-11 11-7 winner.
After a relatively trouble-free road to the final, the second seeded Knight quickly found himself locked in a tussle in the decider. A long opening game was taken 12-10 by Charles Sharpes, setting the tone for the match to come. Although the Kiwi was able to pull ahead by winning the next two games, the fourth-seeded 21 year old showed his pluck by winning the fourth game.
In the fifth game Knight's relative freshness (Sharpes had played a tough five set semi-final the night before) helped him win the day.
It was third time lucky for Knight, who had reached the finals of his last two PSA tour events in Palmerston North and Sao Paulo, Brazil. On both of those occasions Knight was pipped in close five game battles, so turning the tables would have been particularly satisfying for the Horowhenua native.
The win will also allowed Knight to pocket a fourth career PSA title, to add to earlier career wins in Christchurch, Adelaide and Vancouver.
