No Surprises in Chch Quarters

The Doubledot Media Christchurch Boys High School Open quarter-finals have gone to plan today at Burnside.  After the drama of last night's first round matches, the quarter-finals were completed without anKashif Shuja 2009y upsets.

Top seed Mike Corren was dominant in his first two games against Kashif Shuja and looked to have a semi-final berth booked easily but Shuja fought back and took the third in a very close game.  Corren however was too strong in the fourth and took the match.
Kevin Moran played accurate error-free squash in the first two games of his quarter-final against Lance Beddoes, forcing errors from his opponent.  Moran could have finished the match in the third with two match balls but could not convert them.  Beddoes finished off this tight game with the next two points, Moran clearly upset by a ball that looked out but was not called at 10 all.  Moran did not let this trouble him too much and came back strongly to close out the match, taking the fourth with relative ease.
After his marathon last night Douglas Kempsell was a bit slow starting and surrendered an early 5/1 lead in his first game against Finland's Jaakko Vahamaa.  He eventually got into his work and played some great shots to close out the first game 11/7.  Kempsell dominated the next two games and booked a spot in the semis to ensure a strong Scottish presence in the semi-finals.

Paul Coll looked too strong for Ben Grindrod, taking the first game comfortably 11/4.  But it wasn't going to be all plain sailing with Grindrod showing superb fighting qualities to build up a good lead 9/5 in the second.  Coll then showed his class, tightened his game up and clawed his way back to take the game 12/10.  Coll looked in control of the 3rd to take a 10-7 lead but it took him the three match balls to finally claim victory 11/9.
