Your guide to doing it right

You can improve your squash skills and prevent injuries by practicing good technique. Learn the SquashStart way to swing the racket and feel the difference.

While there are subtle differences of opinion in the optimal way to hold and swing a squash racket, there are common things that everyone agrees on when it comes to preventing bad technique. Holding and swinging the racket incorrectly not only takes away from what you are trying to achieve but can also do your joints damage – especially when your body starts to get older. Setting a good technique foundation will not only help you master those advanced moves later on and get the best results on court, but it will also make it possible for you to enjoy the sport more.

Created in 2014, SquashStart are the national coaching resources designed to help beginners’ journeys into squash smooth by teaching the basics. The coaching resources (manuals and DVDs) can be used by clubs to run target market programmes (Squash Ignite for youth, Social Slam for adults and Women’s Squash for females) to increase participation in these groups of players.

All affiliated clubs will shortly receive a copy of the new racket skills posters which illustrate the different parts of the swing in 6 different shots.

If you are new there is a lot to remember but don’t stress, you can also check out the technique videos online. Don't forget to look for a coach who has attended one of the coach learning modules relevant to where you are on the Athlete Pathway - as they will be trained to guide you through the movements and help you feel at ease.
