Five Australian Titles for Kiwis
7 Sep 2013New Zealanders have come away with five of the titles at the Australian Masters Champs in Canberra.
Leading the way for the Kiwis was Becky Clarke, who clinched the women's 40-44 title by beating Janelle Scobie in four sets.
Wanganui's Rod Bannister was the next Kiwi to taste success, beating rival Tony Whackett in straight games. Bannister's win was made all the more impressive by the fact they had shared the wins in their first two meetings in the Trans Tasman Test Series last week - both gruelling five setters.
Mark Waldin took the men's 55-59 title by beating Peter Adrians in four sets. Meanwhile, New Zealand's two guaranteed titles came from all Canterbury clashes which were won by Lawrence Skurr and Karen Walton. Skurr won the men's 60-64 title by beating old sparring partner Wayne Seebeck 3/0, while Walton edged Christchurch Football's Freda Walker in straight games to secure her title.
In addition to Walker and Seebeck, Mickayla Kerr was runner-up in the women's 35-39 division, and Mark Millar and Liz Hamilton both came third in the 50-54 divisions. Invercargill's Marty McKelvie also won the second division in the men's 50-54 category, capping a successful week for the Kiwis.
The squash is not over yet, with the third Trans-Tasman test to be played on Saturday. Australia holds an unassailable 2-1 lead in the series, but there will be plenty of pride at stake for the Kiwis.
