World Masters Games Day 3 Wrap Up

The third day of the World Masters Games has wrapped up at the North Shore Squash Club and there is some excitement to be had in the coming days as a number of finalists are decided.

Men's Open 35+ Semi Finals

New Zealander and ex professional player Kashif Shuja was the first to secure his place in the final of the Men’s 35+ with a strong performance against fellow kiwi player and fifth seed Adrian Mennell. Second seed Sam Atkins made his way into the final with a win in three over fellow Kiwi Neil Rossin.

Men's Open 40+ Quarter Finals

The top 4 seeds in the Men’s 40+ have made it through to the semi-finals with Corey Love of New Zealand being the only one to claim his win in 3. Richard Green of the UK, Allan Crome of New Zealand and Daniel Woolbank of Australia all took their wins in 4 making it anyone’s game on Semi Finals day.

Men's Open 45+ Quarter Finals

It was a mixed bag of results in the Men’s 45+ Open with top seed Scott Gardiner of NZ claiming his win in 3 against Stephen O’Toole of NZ whilst Troy Dunn of NZ has made his way to the semi’s after his opponent Tristan Franklin (also of NZ) had to retire injured. Paul Bedford the second seed made light work in the Trans-Tasman battle against Tim Bateman of Australis winning in 3. Fifth seed Robert Clark of NZ took his win in 4 over his higher seed opponent Jason Oxenham of NZ. This sets up an all kiwi affair in the Semi Finals.

Men's Open 50+ Quarter Finals

In the Men’s 50+ top seed Craig van der Wath of South Africa will have to get his way past the locals in the Semi Finals after his win in 4 against another kiwi Paul Gardiner. Gary Duberly of New Zealand and a local North Shore Squash Club player used the home court advantage against his opponent and fellow countryman Nigel Lloyd to win his match in 4. Grant Craig of New Zealand the third seed took his win over sixth seed Clark Ellery of New Zealand in 3. Canadian Steven Wren took his win over Richard van Rynbach the seventh seed and local Aucklander in what appeared to be a comfortable 3 sets.

Men's Open 55+ Quarter Finals

Mark Taylor of the UK and the sixth seed in the Men’s 55+ made sure to get his way into the top 4 after a strong performance against the third seed Gary Barker of South Africa. Top seed Peter Gilbee of Australia took his win in 3 against New Zealand’s Michael White. Antony Brettkelly of the USA took his win in five against South African John van Heeswijk showing he deserved a place in the semis. Dale Robbins the second seed rounds out the top 4 with his win over New Zealander Martin McKelvie in 3 setting up an exciting semi-final round with a great international flair.

Men's Open 60+ Quarter Finals

One Australian will be trying to take the Men’s 60+ title back across the ditch after it was a day for the Kiwis in this draw. Top seed and local North Shore player Mark Waldin took his win in a Trans-Tasman battle from Kevin Smuts in 3. Lawrence Skurr of NZ took his win from unseeded Malawi player Gordon Benbow in a thrilling five setter. Wayne Seebeck New Zealand’s Masters Director notched up another win against the Australians when the sixth seed took out Gary Cowan the third seed in three. Roy Oliver is the lone Australian standing after beating fellow Australian player Trevor Harvey in 3.

It wasn’t meant to be a straight forward round for the Men’s 65+ with all but one of the semi finalists taking their wins in 4. Top seeds Hongi Laing and Trevor Colyer of New Zealand both fought past their lower seeded opponents and fellow Kiwis Ross Cornes and James Leddy respectively to take their wins in 4. Ross Wells the sixth seed upset third seed Christopher Grainger of South Africa in 3 to claim his place in the top 4 whilst Ronald Crosby took out Bruce Mellor in an all Kiwi battle for Crosby to round out the top 4.

Pool Play will continue on Tuesday for the Men’s Open 70+ players with a Trans-Tasman rivalry in both pools. Pool A will see Stephen Jacobs of NZ take on Michael Millington of Australia whilst Pool B will see Alex Houlston of NZ take on Max Bourne of Australia.

It’s another leisurely day for the Men’s Open 75+ with their next games being Wednesday night.

Men’s Open 80+

The final between New Zealand’s Trevor Coulter and the UK’s Malcolm Gilham will be Thursday afternoon so the players can rest up before their big match.

Women’s Open 35+

Jo Shanks and Shelley Kitchen of New Zealand have continued their winning ways with Shanks taking a win from Australian Diane Antonsen and Kitchen taking a win from Tracy Browne of South Africa.

The Women’s 45+ sees five times World Champion Sarah Fitz-Gerald in good stead to claim another Masters title after a win in 3 against New Zealander Sam Godfrey. The remaining top 4 seeds will be doing their best to prevent Fitz-Gerald from taking the title and will aim to keep the trophy in NZ. Tanya Laurence, Mandy Kennedy and Lisa Cowlard all took their wins in 3 and are all local Auckland club players.

Top seeded Australian Susan Hilier took her spot in the Semi Finals of the Women’s 50+ with a comfortable win over Di Tasker of NZ in 3. New Zealander and fourth seed Annie Hall took her win from Suzanne Dufresne of Canada in 3 as did South African Angelique Clifton Parks who defeated Juliet McWilliams of NZ. Kathryn McKay of NZ and Julie Kresller of America battled hard in their match and it was an exciting five setter for these ladies with McKay prevailing on the day.
