Year of Women's Squash off to a Great Start!

Today is Intenational Women's Day and we celebrate the success of the Year of Women's Squash to date...

As squash clubs are starting to get back into their season, we are already seeing some great initiatives for the Year of Women's Squash.

Te Aroha SC ran an R18 Ladies Tournament last weekend, Papakura Tennis & Squash Club are hosting a Women in Squash Open Day and Masterton Squash Club have launched a new recruitment campaign targeted specifically at women - Less than a Coffee a Week.

Squash NZ have just confirmed funding to design and print some posters for clubs around the country so clubs can look forward to this free resource. The Year of Women's Squash page is up-and-running on the new Squash NZ website with some ideas for clubs and some great case studies. This will be continuously updated throughout the year.

Squash NZ are hoping to officially launch the campaign in the next few weeks whilst gold-medal winners Jaclyn Hawkes and Joelle King are still in the country so keep an eye out for more details on that.

Squash is a great game for women for many reasons but particularly the four Fs for Females - Fun, Fitness, Friends and Family!

Squash is FUN to play, chasing a ball around a square room! There is often laughter heard on courts as shots go astray or you hit a fantastic winning shot. And on a cold, wet Winter's day, it is definitely more fun to be inside than on a field or court in the rain somewhere!

Squash is great for FITNESS. 45 minutes on the court is guaranteed to leaving anyone sweating up a storm, but because you are focused on that little ball, you don't even realise you're working up a sweat, and more importantly, building up those muscles and burning those calories!

Squash is a great way to meet and keep FRIENDS. It's a very social sport with clubs offering Club Nights for everyone to turn up, play each other and have a drink and/or bite to eat in the clubrooms afterwards. Interclub and tournaments provide plenty of opportunities to meet new people and because of a shared passion, often end up friends.

Squash is a great sport for the whole FAMILY. There's not many sports where Mum, Dad and the kids can all participate at the same time in the same place! Most clubs offer family membership and Junior memberships are always significantly discounted.

Squash is also great value for money. Not many other sports provides year round access to the game, as many times as you like and it's certainly A LOT cheaper than joining a gym. Most clubs offer a payment schedule that allows members to spread their payments.
