Carterton Balloon Tragedy Touches Masterton Squash Club

The fatal hot air balloon crash in Carterton on Saturday has claimed the lives of two prominent members of the Masterton squash community.

The catastrophic hot air balloon crash in Carterton on Saturday has shaken the squash community. All eleven passengers on board the hot air balloon were killed in the crash, which has been recognised as the worst aviation disaster on New Zealand soil since 1963.2012 Balloon tragedy Des Ann Dean

Among the victims were Masterton Squash Club stalwarts Des and Ann Dean. The Deans were well known and liked among New Zealand squash circles, both as players, and while supporting their three daughters: Fiona, Bronwyn and Deborah. The three girls all played as juniors; with Fiona (the youngest) going on to represent New Zealand at the 1998 Commonwealth Games.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the Dean family and the Masterton Squash Club at this time.
