King Pipped at the Post in Philadelphia

Heartbreak for New Zealand squash star Joelle King at the US Open in Philadelphia.

The Kiwi qualifier has come within a whisker of beating world number one Nicol David, in the semifinals of the prestigious US Open in Philadelphia.

King, the world number 12, had already accounted for fifth ranked Egyptian Nour El Sherbini and English world number four Jenny Duncalf in the previous two rounds, but looked set for a quick defeat after dropping the first two games against David.  However, the 24-year-old dug deep to take the next two games to push the Malaysian to five.Matamata Open 2012 finalists

King then rattled up a 6-0 lead in the decider, before David's class finally came to the fore. The top seed rattled off the next 10 points in a row and but for a loose shot would have made it 11, as she completed a remarkable 11-8, 11-6, 5-11, 8-11, 11-7 victory in a gruelling 83 minutes.

A relieved David was thrilled with her victory.

"“I just knew that it’s not over until it’s over."

“I’ve been there before and it’s just down to being determined not to let it go, not making any errors and getting my momentum back.

David will play Raneem El Weleily in the final, after the second seeded Egyptian downed England's Laura Massaro 7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 10-12, 11-4.
