Close Opening Encounters in Masters Teams Event

Canterbury and Bay of Plenty have emerged victorious after tight tussles in the opening round of the teams event.

Both morning ties have gone the distance today, with games countbacks required to identify winners after being tied at five matches all.

Top seeds Canterbury have edged fourth seeds and defending champions Wellington 19-17 on games countback.  Meanwhile, Bay of Plenty has upset Auckland 17-16 on countback. 

The teams event is being played in two pools of three.  Pool A includes Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Eastern, with Canterbury, Wellington and Waikato in Pool B.  After pool play has been completed on Tuesday morning, crossover matches will be played to determine final placings, and the 2012 recipient of the highly coveted Christchurch Cup.  The second round of pool matches got underway on Monday afternoon, with Auckland playing Eastern and Canterbury playing Waikato.
