Ladies Flying Flag at World Masters

Some strong results from New Zealand women at the World Masters overnight, and three quarterfinalists!

New Zealand continued its strong showing at the World Masters Championships in Birmingham overnight, with the women in particular proving successful.  Lisa Cowlard is through to the third round of the 45+ age group, having beaten Namibian and English opponents overnight.  Kathryn McKay has won her second round match against Japanese player Ikuko Noda to also reach the third round.  Freda Walker has reached the quarterfinals in the 55+ age group by beating Jane Segall of the USA 9-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-6.  Kaye Jackson won an all-Kiwi affair in the 65+ age group, beating Eliza MacDonald 11-3, 11-4, 11-6 to advance to the third round.  The only casualty was Nadine Cull, who lost her first round match to Carola Weiss of Germany.

The men's draw has produced three quarter-finalists overnight, in Gary Duberly, Mark Waldin and Tony Naughton.  Gary overcame a slow start in his fourth round match in the 45+ age group to beat Phillip Mockridge 0-11, 12-10, 11-9, 15-13.  Mark Waldin overcame the challenge presented by Lawrence Malan in straight games, 11-9, 11-6, 12-10.  Tony Naughton won his fourth round match in the men's 60+ age group by beating John Hithersay 10-12, 13-11, 11-5, 11-5.
