Barnett best of Kiwis on day one in Doha

Three of the five stron NZ team are through to the second round at the Junior Men's World Champs

Mixed results for New Zealand on day one of the individual championships at the Junior Men's World Squash Championships in Doha.

Three of the five strong Kiwi team are through to the second round, with New Zealand Junior Open champion Jonathan Barnett leading the charge.  Barnett has strolled to a straight games victory over Guatemala's Ricardo Toscano, winning 11-3, 11-2, 11-3.

Teammate Todd Redman also picked up a win, beating Frenchman Baptiste Masotti 11-9, 11-9, 11-9.  The two players had been level at 9-all in all three games with Redman showing superb control to win the vital points when it counted.  The third player safely through the opening round is James Cooper, who advanced on a walkover against Guatemala's Christian Urruela.

Not such good news for Zac Millar and Ben Grindrod.  Millar made a nervous start against Pakistan's Shahjahan Khan and by the time he hit his straps it was too late as he went down 11-3, 11-5, 11-8.  Grindrod also came off second best on day one, but gave 12th Frenchman Damien Volland something to think about in an 11-3, 11-8, 1-11, 11-7 defeat.

Jonathan Barnett will face Canada's Cameron Seth in round two today while Todd Redman takes on England's Taminder Gata-Aura.
