Racketlon Coming to New Zealand

Squash New Zealand is playing a role in setting up the Racketlon New Zealand organisation.

Racketlon is a sport in which you play your opponent in each of four racquet sports: table tennis, badminton, squash and tennis. A Racketlon match contains four sets, one in each sport.  The winner is the player who has the highest points aggregate across the four sports (ie it is possible to lose three sets closely, and win the fourth comfortably and win the match).

The International Racketlon Federation (FIR) was founded in 2001, and includes 36 member countries.  The FIR is currently encouraging more countries to affiliate to it so it can expand its global reach and qualify for large world events (such as the World Games).

An Incorporated Society has been set up by representatives of the four racquet sports in order to bring the game to New Zealand. While there are multiple obstacles to the sport taking off, including marketing and facilities, this is an exciting development for racquet sports in New Zealand.  History has shown that participation in the four racquet sports has increased markedly in countries where racketlon is played, as players seek to improve their weakest discipline(s).

If you think racketlon sounds like a fun challenge, keep your eyes peeled for further developments.
