Two Kiwis In Aussie Open Quarters

The progress of New Zealand players continues at the Australian Open PSA squash tournament in Melbourne with two players through to the quarter-finals.

Palmerston North 21-year-old Luke Jones defeated eighth seeded Thomas Calvert of Australia in the second round 11-7, 11-7, 11-8 and now takes on fourth seed and world No.78 Mohd Syafiq Kamal (Malaysia) in his next match. The Malaysian had beaten Wellingtonian Scott Galloway in his second round match 12-10, 11-9, 11-4.

Also through to the last eight is Commonwealth Games rep, Evan Williams (Wellington), the seventh seed who beat Malaysian Alvinn Keo 11-7 14-12 11-7 and now plays Switzerland’s Dimitri Steinnman the third seed ranked 84th for a place in the semis.

In the women’s draw the two Kiwis, Kaitlyn Watts and Abbie Palmer lost their second round matches to fifth seed Sarah Cardwell and Low Wee Wern (Malaysia) in straight sets respectively.
