2017 Annual Awards - Refereeing Awards Part 1

We start to take a look at our Refereeing Awards in preparation for the 2017 Annual Awards that will take place on 25th November, 6.30pm at JetPark in Auckland.

The nominations for the two Refereeing Awards are

  • Chris Buckland
  • Glenn Carson
  • Paul Kennett
  • Joss Urbahn

The refereeing awards are as follow:

The Derek Cook Memorial Trophy was donated by Kelvin Harding in 1981, following the death of Derek Cook. Both Cook and Harding were A grade players from the Wellington district (Harding lived in Masterton), were good mates, and renowned for their fun-loving approach to life. When he died, Cook had also become a leading contributor to refereeing in New Zealand - one of few top players to contribute in this way.

Joseph Romanos, author of Long or Short, had this to say about Cook: "Cook had taken up squash in 1963 when growing up in Oamaru. He moved to Wellington in 1969, on a job transfer with Shell Oil. However, he soon found the job rather tedious. The challenges of running an escort agency and then being a private detective were more to his liking".

This trophy focuses on the contribution to others in refereeing through training, assessment, encouragement, promotion or rules knowledge. Awarded for one or more of, but not limited to:

  • Significant contribution to referee training
  • Significant contribution to referee assessment
  • Significant contribution to local referee improvement
  • Significant contribution through rules advice and interpretation
  • Significant contribution through voluntary referee administration
  • Significant effort in referee recruitment or advancement
  • Significant effort in mentoring referees
  • Significant promotion of refereeing
  • Commitment to enhancing referee reputation and status through behaviour modelling
  • Commitment to sharing knowledge and experience
  • Exceptional and appropriate interaction with players and other referees

The Referees Trophy for Personal Endeavour focuses on a referee’s own achievement, improvement, effort, knowledge or ability. Awarded for one or more of, but not limited to:

  • An exceptional achievement
  • The most improved referee over a season
  • Significant improvement or achievement beyond current level
  • Significant effort to improve own competency
  • Significant appointment to referee internationally beyond current level (either within or outside of New Zealand)
  • Significant improvement in status
  • Exceptional assessment record
  • Exceptional knowledge gained or displayed

When deciding the judging panel considers the criteria above in making their final decision.

The first finalist is Chris Buckland. Chris (better known as Buck) has been an outstanding servant of Squash over many years and this year has been no exception with Chris attending a large proportion of our National Events this year. In addition to this Chris was appointed to the World Masters Games, World Junior Championships and was Tournament Referee for the Oceania Championships held recently in Tahiti. Chris has also gone out of his way to Mentor and Assess candidates through the year, giving up much of his personal time to do so. Chris is standing down from our Referees Management Panel this year, after serving many years as both a Panel member and as Director of Refereeing. During this time Chris has made a large contribution to refereeing in New Zealand, including establishing Assessment Registers for all National and District Referees to track referees records against the standard required for each level.

The second finalist is Glenn Carson. Glenn's nomination has been accepted by the organizing committing GOLDOC and the Commonwealth Games Federation to attend the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Glenn will be attending his second Commonwealth Games after having refereed at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Glenn has a long list of refereeing achievements with his most recent and notable being his appointment as centre referee for the WSF World Junior Squash Championships Men’s Final held in Tauranga. Glenn has recently refereed at the 2017 Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Open.

Glenn is an internationally qualified World Squash Referee, the highest Accreditation Level in Squash and one of only 20 worldwide. Glenn's appointment as a World Referee at the highest level internationally, has had a positive impact on refereeing by helping to raise the profile and helped in recruiting potential referees. Glenn is an excellent ambassador for Refereeing in Waikato and New Zealand. As a relatively young and highly competent referee, he has been instrumental in changing the image of the national refereeing programme. Squash as a sport struggles to recruit new referees, meaning Glenn’s ambassadorship is hugely important. His excellence in his field has also highlighted the pathways available to referees (trips to national and international events including highlights like his selection as a Commonwealth Games official), also very helpful as a recruitment tool.

Glenn is able to display coolness under pressure, shows sound judgement, offers clear communication, diplomacy, consistency, excellent vision, using all senses, all contributing to his success as a world class referee. His ability to learn, relate to players and calmly manage high pressure situations has been commented on by senior WSF Assessor's as ideal attributes for a squash referee. His skills allow him to run training and development seminars for NZ from club through to National level referees allowing us to grow referee numbers both in the Waikato and nationally.

Glenn mentors and also formally assesses NZ National referees during the season to assist in gaining higher levels of accreditation. Glenn has the necessary skills to appoint referees to events, in accordance with Squash New Zealand's appointment process and within the budget allowed.

Congratulations Buck and Glenn on being a finalists in the Refereeing Awards.
