Day 1 of New Zealand Junior Age Groups Winds Up

180 competitors have descended on Burnside and Squash HQ for the 2017 New Zealand Junior Age Group Championships with day 1 seeing lots of excitement on the court with most of the higher seeded players getting through unscathed.

The Boys Under 19 saw all top seeds progress through to the top 16. In the Girls Under 19 18th seed Grace Hymers and 17th seed Lauren Vodanovich make their way into the top 16 with wins over their higher seeded opponents.

The Boys Under 17 has seen the top 8 players being decided already with the only upset of the round coming from 9th seed Logan Webber who took out the 8th seed Taylor Bettelheim to make it into the quarter finals. The Girls Under 17 saw another 9th seed taking out the 8th seed with Charlotte Galloway taking out Anna O’Connor to make it into the quarter finals.

It was smooth sailing in the Boys Under 15 with the only upset of the round coming from 17th seed Mark Steventon who has made his way into the top 16 with the other seeded players. The Girls Under 15 got off without a hitch with all top 8 players progressing to the quarter finals.

It was another 9th seed upset in the Boys Under 13 with Campbell Griffin claiming his win over the 8th seed Jack Lamb to make it into the top 8. The Girls Under 13 saw a qualification round to decide the players into the top 8 and it was another win for the 9th seed with Olivia Rhodes taking her place in top 8 with a win over Darnell Lima.

The Boys and Girls Under 11 kick off their first round matches today.
