Past President of Whakatane Squash Club, Arch Delahunty, Killed in Train Crash

Arch Delahunty was killed after his car was struck by a train at the Otamarakau Sandpit Reserve.

Arch, who was an avid squash player, had been with the former BOP Catchment Commission back in the 1970s and returned to work with the regional council in the Eastern Bay of Plenty about 12 years ago.

Engineering was an integral part of who Arch was, rivers and drainage manager Bruce Crabbe said.

"Arch was a humble man with many talents (squash being a questionable one) and a wicked sense of humour”, said Crabbe.

Arch was well-known in the squash fraternity around the Eastern Bay of Plenty, having been a past president of the Whakatane Squash Club.

"Arch Delahunty dedicated a lot of time to squash over the years. He made himself available to anyone who wanted help with anything relating to squash, from coaching to restringing rackets," the Edgecumbe Squash Club said.

Arch will be farewelled on Monday, July 10 at 11am at the Whakatane Baptist Church on Keepa Rd followed by a wake at the Whakatane Squash Club.
