Australia’s Sam Foyle was too powerful for Hwayeong Eum of Korea with Foyle taking the win in 3. It was an all Kiwi match up next between Emma Millar and Abbie Palmer. The first match of the ILT Community Trust NZ Southern Invercargill Open saw top seed Ivan Yuen up against sixth seed Mahesh Mangaokar and the match started off as it was to continue, with both players hunting for winning shots, working hard to take the set, with Yuen eventually taking it 14-12. The second set saw Yuen more in control, however Mangaokar was fighting hard for every point. Just when it looked like Yuen would take the match in three, Mangaokar made a massive comeback to take the third set and continued the intensity into the fourth, taking it 11-9 to take the match into a fifth set. Mangaokar seemed to have control of the match, up 9-6, Yuen suddenly stepped back up and took the set and the match 11-9 after a gruelling 87 minutes.

The match between New Zealand’s Evan Williams and Peter Creed from Wales proved to be even more demanding. Creed took the first set commandingly, showing superb speed around the court to force loose balls from Williams that he could put away. Williams showed more focus in the second set, making less errors, but Creed managed to sneak in 11-9. The third set saw Williams continue to exert pressure on Creed, keeping himself in the hunt. At 12-11 to Williams, Creed had to leave the court for a blood injury. On his return the point was replayed twice before Williams managed to take the set. Williams took full advantage in the fourth set and took it 11-5 to keep the match alive. Creed took an early lead in the fifth, looking to have his focus back, before Williams again came back, gaining the lead again. Creed then had to work even harder, but got the result he wanted after 95 minutes of play.

Greg Lobban came out strong against Eain Yow Ng, and while Yow fought hard, Lobban proved to be too strong on the night, maintaining control of the match and putting pressure on Yow to force the errors. He remained composed throughout, taking the win 3-0.

The final match of the evening saw Australian’s Rex Hedrick and Joshua Larkin battle it out for the last remaining semi-final berth. The first set was very tightly contested with both players looking to take an early lead. Hedrick sealed it 11-9 and then dominated in the second to take it 11-5. With a 6-0 lead in the third it looked like Hedrick was going to romp home, however Larkin had more to give and soon it was 7-all. Hedrick was able to keep pushing and booked his place in the semi-finals by taking the match in three.
