Southern Cross Travel Insurance Oceania Junior Championships Decided

After a big day of finals at the Southern Cross Travel Insurance Oceania Junior Championships the winners have been decided and 8 titles will be staying in New Zealand, 1 title to Australia and 1 to Singapore.

In the Under 11 girls New Zealanders Maia Smales and Anabel Romero Gemmell took to the court to decide the winner and Smales used her local knowledge and home court advantage to take the win in 3 over Gemmell. The Under 11 boys saw another New Zealand battle take place and it was Matthew Growcott who took the win from Reece Holmes in a strong 3.

The Under 13 Girls had another battle of the Kiwis with Sophie Hodges and Natalie Sayes taking on each other. Sayes and Hodges had a tough five setter but it was Sayes who managed to get the win over Hodges today. The Under 13 Boys saw Singaporean Edward Boon Hwi Thng take on Australian Oscar Curtis, Curtis looked to make good inroads into Thng but Thng proved to be too strong for Curtis and he took the win in 4.

The Under 15 Girls saw Australian Sze Yu Lee claim the title from her fellow Australian Georgia Lane in a convincing 3-0 display. The Under 15 Boys saw New Zealander Leo Fatialofa keep another trophy at the Henderson Squash club as he took the win from Australian Remi Young in 4.

The Under 17 Girls saw two New Zealanders Rhiarne Taiapa and Amara Afghan taking on each other for the title. It was Taiapa who proved to be too strong today claiming the title in 3. The Under 17 boys saw club mates and local Kiwi players Matthew Lucente and Gabe Yam battle it out, with some blood, injury and everything else in between it was Lucente who came out on top in 4 to claim the title.

The Under 19 Girls saw Kaitlyn Watts of New Zealand and Alex Haydon of Australia compete in the last Trans-Tasman battle of the event. Watts showed she was too strong for Haydon taking the win from her in 3. The Under 19 Boys saw the final Kiwi showdown of the tournament with Finn Trimble and Quinn Udy battling it out. Trimble proved his strength and claimed the win in 3.

Thanks to the Henderson Squash Club for the great weekend and the warm hospitality. The prizegiving was started off with a Kapa Haka performance from Rutherford college and the trophies were provided by Taniwha Tales. The Trans-Tasman test series kicks off at 2pm tomorrow and the full story on matchups can be found here and matches will be livestreamed here and here.
