Day 1 Oceania Junior Championships Complete

The Henderson Squash Club was a hive of activity as the Oceania Junior Championships kicked off today with 215 competitors from New Zealand, Australia, Oceania and further afield competed to try and claim their age group title.

The Boys Under 19 was a relatively straight forward competition for most competitors with the only upset coming when 18th seed Joel Arscott defeated 14th seed and fellow Australian compatriot Jamie Pattison in 3. The Girls Under 19 saw many of the top seeds have byes and it was here where 18th seed New Zealander Taylor Clarke took out 14th seed New Zealanders Kelsey Manuatu in a hard fought 4 and upset the higher seed. Jessica Osborne the 17th seed managed to also upset her higher seeded Australian compatriot Grace Pattison in 4 as well to proceed to round 2.

The Boys Under 17 saw a number of battles with the match of the round having to go to Wellingtonian Campbell Webster (17th seed) and Midlands Keidah Bungard (16th seed) where both players put everything on the line but it was Bungard who prevailed in 5. The upsets of the round came from 20th seed Kiwi Manaia Murphy-Fell who took out 13th seed Arenui Temaiana of New Caledonia in 3 and 19th seed Australian Harry Palfreyman who took at 14th seed New Caledonian Enzo Robinet. The Girls 17 saw all but one of the top seeds proceed to round 2 with 9th seed New Zealander Charlotte Galloway beating 8th seed Anna Goodman of Australia in 3.

The Boys Under 15 saw a number of the boys trying to qualify for the main draw with some tough battles. There were a number of battles to be had in the main draw with a number of upsets occurring. Nicolas Quiniou the 21st seed of New Caledonia taking out 12th seed New Zealander Braedyn Henderson in an epic five setter. Henry Moran the 20th seed New Zealander managed to get a win in 5 over the 13th seed Mitchell Black of Australia in another great five setter. Upsets continued with 19th seed Brice Nicolas of New Caledonia taking out 14th seed Zhou Peng Lin of China and 22nd seed Devlin Gurr of New Zealand taking out 11th seed Christopher Pon of Australia. The final upset of the round was from 18th seed Kiwi Sam Kelly who took out 15th seed Sam Goodman of Australia. The Under 15 girls proved to be no different with upsets coming from 19th seed Australian Amber Chen taking out 14th seed Yang Ning of China. 22nd seed Sophie Bradly of New Zealand also got an upset in the Under 15’s defeating Leandre Sze of Hong Kong in 3. The final upset came from 18th seed New Zealander Katie Templeton who took out 15th seed Caitlin Porter of Australia in 3.

The Boys Under 13’s saw only one upset with 10th seed Tom Marshall of New Zealand defeating 7th seed Andre Lynn of Australia in 3, whilst all other top seeds progressed on. The Under 13 Girls upset came from Ashlee Pepper of New Zealand who took out Shona Coxsedge of Australia in 4 to claim her spot in round 2.

The Boys Under 11 saw the top seeds having the morning off whilst the qualifiers played to get their way into the main draw. The Girls Under 11 saw 5th seed New Zealander Saara Joukani take out Australian 4th seed Emily Lamb in 3 to claim a spot in the Semi’s.
