Wayne Werder Announced as Assistant Coach/ManagerWayne Werder News Clipping Image

Squash NZ is pleased to announce the appointment of Wayne Werder to the role of Assistant Coach/Manager to the 2017 World Doubles Championships and 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Wayne will be supporting lead coach Glen Wilson in Squash NZ’s bid to continue our rich success in both these events. In 2016, Squash NZ claimed back-to-back world doubles titles in the mixed and women’s event, and a podium finish in the men’s doubles. At previous Commonwealth Games, Squash NZ has achieved nine medals including three gold medals, three silver medals and three bronze medals.

Squash NZ will be sending a squad of six players to the 2017 World Doubles in Manchester in preparation for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Wayne has been involved in squash for over 30 years. He has been involved in three Commonwealth Games campaigns as a player, coach and high performance manager. His involvement in the first ever Commonwealth Games, where doubles squash was first on display, has allowed him to witness the game evolve through its different methods of scoring, court and tin sizes.

Wayne’s experience off the squash court lends itself to the responsibilities of this management role. Wayne is the General Manager of TECT (Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust), and was previously the CEO of Sport Bay of Plenty, overseeing the development of sport through the region. He was also an influential figure in the successful campaign to host the 2017 World Junior Squash Championships in Tauranga in July – a significant milestone on the Squash NZ calendar this year.

Wayne and Glen’s relationship goes back many years, competing against each other as juniors, and representing Squash NZ at World Championship events. Squash NZ is confident that this pairing will strengthen the team dynamics, creating a culture of success.

Wayne stated, “It’s a privilege to be involved with any NZ team, particularly the Commonwealth Games and World Doubles where we have such a strong history of success. I’m looking forward to working with the wider team to create an environment where the players have the best chance of success”.

Squash NZ wish both Glen and Wayne the very best of luck in guiding the Squash NZ team to success at the 2017 World Doubles Championships and 2018 Commonwealth Games.
